About Barbara Flynn

Barbara Flynn is an English actor who trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she won the Gold Medal in 1968, before learning her craft in repertory theatre. Her first major television role came early, as Freda Ashton in the wartime saga A Family at War (1970-1972).

Through the 1980s she became one of British television's most recognisable faces. She was the milk woman in Open All Hours, Jill Swinburne in Alan Plater's Beiderbecke trilogy (1985-1988) and Dr Rose Marie in the campus comedy-drama A Very Peculiar Practice (1986-1988). In the 1990s she played Judith Fitzgerald, wife of Robbie Coltrane's criminal psychologist, in Cracker (1993-1995).

Later highlights include Emily Forsyte in The Forsyte Saga (2002), the formidable Mrs Jamieson in Cranford (2007-2009), Aunt Hermione in The Durrells, Councillor Lavinia Bone in the sitcom Kate & Koji (2020-2022) and Tecteun in Doctor Who: Flux (2021). Her film appearances include Lindsay Anderson's Britannia Hospital (1982), Miss Potter (2006), in which she played Beatrix Potter's mother Helen, and The Christmas Candle (2014), and she has worked extensively as a documentary narrator, including on the BBC's Horizon. On stage she appeared in Elegy at the Donmar Warehouse (2016).

In Beyond Paradise she is a series regular as Anne Lloyd, Martha's mother, whose frankness and appetite for a new romance give the show much of its warmth and comedy.
